Spokesman: Russian embassy employees not hurt in explosion in Kabul

The attack occurred in the late afternoon, when many office workers were leaving the area. Defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said the bomber "made it through the first checkpoint but was stopped at the second checkpoint and detonated".

A public health official said three dead and 10 wounded had been taken to city hospitals. "It was a horrible scene", an eyewitness told TOLOnews.

A suicide bomber struck near the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan's capital on Tuesday, killing five people in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

The last major assault in Kabul was on October 20 when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Shiite mosque during evening prayers, killing 56 and wounding 55.

The incident happened just after 7pm on Wednesday night. "We express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured", the Foreign Office said in a statement. The police promptly cordoned off the area of the attack.
