Joachim Ronning In Talks To Direct Maleficent 2

Maleficent, which dropped during the same weekend three years earlier broke records its opening weekend of $69.4M and went onto to make $758.5M worldwide. Angelina Jolie will return to play the character, based on the villain from 1959's Sleeping Beauty.

Joachim Rønning, who helmed Jerry Bruckheimer's and Disney's fifth Pirates of the Carribean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales is apparently in the Disney business once again. In April, he was said to be directing an adaption of Michael Crichton's final book, Micro. He has also expected to be the director Pirates of the Carribean 6 when production for that film gets off the ground. Clearly in the eyes of Disney, that movie was a success, and they were happy enough with Rønning's work to offer him Maleficent 2.

No official release date has been set for Maleficent 2. It's encouraging to know that Linda Woolverton's script is being rewritten (or, at the very least, being fixed up) by a writer with a solid track record, but I sincerely hope that I won't come out of seeing Maleficent 2 as disappointed as I was after watching Alice Through the Looking Glass (and The Huntsman: Winter's War, which shares a producer with Alice and Maleficent in Joe Roth, who is overseeing Maleficent 2 for Disney).

Deadline first reported the news. Pirates 5 wasn't exactly a hit with critics, but it did bring in nearly $800 million worldwide, so you could say that Rønning a somewhat safe choice to helm Maleficent 2. Wooverton wrote the first "Maleficent" movie as well as the live-action adaptations of "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King".
