Hot hand: Astros tap Verlander's momentum for Game 1 vs. Red Sox

Verlander against Boston's lefty star Chris Sale in Game 1.

The Red Sox have aces in Chris Sale and Rick Porcello, who have both been outstanding all season long. "I don't think now would be the time to start doing that".

President of baseball operations with the Red Sox Dave Dombrowski said recently that Pedroia's situation will have to be managed for the remainder of the second baseman's career. If Bogaerts can perform up to his normal standards and one of the trio of Dustin Pedroia, Andrew Benintendi or Mookie Betts can get hot, then the Sox will be in business. He should see time in the late innings, possibly as a pinch hitter, and as a defensive substitute. They'll likely hit fifth and sixth in the Boston lineup.

The Astros won 101 games and scored a major league best 896 runs, the most in major league history without any player reaching 100 RBIs.

The Red Sox also can take comfort in having just seen the Astros in a four-game series at Fenway Park to end the regular season.

The Yankees acquired Gray in a trade from the Oakland Athletics on July 31. He had a 3.72 ERA in his time with New York and struck out 59 batters in 65.1 innings.

Getting quality starts from two of those three seemed like Boston was asking a lot.

One key stat to know: Sale led all starters with a 36.2 percent strikeout rate, the third-highest rate ever for a starter. He noted the seamless way he transitioned from the White Sox after a December trade as evidence that he's fully capable of handling big situations well. Verlander owns a 2-0 record with a 1.93 ERA.

The American League pennant appears to an open race, as the remaining four teams have the pieces to make a deep run in the 2017 MLB playoffs.

Bogaerts, of course, performed well in the 2013 playoffs, batting.296.

The 2017 American League Divisional Round is set. Boston has always been a strong post-season team. The left-hander became first pitcher in AL to reach 300 strikeouts since Pedro Martinez 1999.

The rest of the Astros projected Game 1 lineup would be Alex Bregman, Yuli Gurriel, Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann. In his last eight starts, the 28-year-old went 3-4 with a 4.30 ERA.

So the Red Sox have a chance.

Tom Brady is leading the NFL in passing yards and hasn't thrown an interception all year. The Houston Astros face off against the Boston Red Sox.

Nunez missed 19 of Boston's last 20 regular-season games with what the team called a sore knee, but they thought he had recovered enough to contribute in the postseason. His walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) was 0.97, while opponents hit.208 against him. David Price made just 11 starts this season, and will be restricted to a bullpen role during the playoffs. The Red Sox can take out Houston with so many talented players.

Let's start with the glass half empty and acknowledge the legitimate concerns about this team's offense.
