Bayern Munich sack Carlo Ancelotti

Bayern Munich confirmed in a statement posted on their website on Thursday that they had fired head coach Carlo Ancelotti after just over a season in the job.

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness revealed Carlo Ancelotti's position at the club became untenable after a group of players turned against the Italian.

The former Chelsea chief guided Bayern to the Bundesliga title last season but crashed out of the Champions League to Real Madrid at the quarter-finals stage.

And now, despite guiding Bayern to the league title last term, it appears to have been decided that the Italian coach is no longer the right man to take the club forward.

"I'd like to thank Carlo for his time working with us and I'm sorry about the way it has developed", Rummenigge added.

Adriano Galliani and Silvio Berlusconi couldn't lure him back to Lombardy in 2015, but Vincenzo Montella is already under pressure this season after big spending in the summer.

Assistant coach Willy Sagnol has taken charge of the team, who return to Bundesliga action at Hertha Berlin on Sunday, on an interim basis.

There was no surprise in Unai Emery's line-up, with the attacking trident of Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani starting at the Parc des Princes in a 4-3-3 formation. "The most important thing is that we remain united as a team".

While star winger Arjen Robben refused to answer a question about whether the manager had his backing post-match.

The defeat in Paris was Bayern's heaviest since losing 0-3 away to Barcelona in the UCL semifinal first leg in May 2015.

The Bundesliga champions are third in the table, behind Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.

"It was a bitter defeat that needs to be discussed and analysed and clearly there will be consequences. That's where we have to continue". The 53-year-old has managed the German national team and had an ill-fated stint at Bayern before being appointed United States boss.

Uli Hoeness is Bayern's current president, with Lahm crediting the three-time European Cup winner with their development as a footballing superpower.
